A NIGHT IN THE SERAGLIO
This one takes me allllll the way back to my days working at LA Opera. I used to be the Partnerships & Events Manager (self-dubbed “Director of Fêtes”) there, and was also looking for ways to make our marketing stand out from all the other arts organizations. While we were game planning our marketing strategy for a 1920’s-version of Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio, Metro came to us, offering Union Station as a blank canvas for an event… naturally, I suggested an experiential pop-up.
Thus, A Night in the Seraglio came to be. Unsuspecting commuters (for better or for worse) walked through the halls of Union Station and found themselves in a Roarin’ Twenties-esque jazz hall. The event featured a live jazz band, burlesque dancers, and singers performing arias from the opera. Interactive actors, dressed as flappers, mingled with the crowd and handed out LA Opera branded materials and information about the upcoming show. This was my first spotlight on NBC Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles Times did a cute lil’ write up about it.
Did it sell out the opera? Not at all! But it sure helped bring awareness. Plus… I had a blast.
